Press Release_22-03_San Marco Road and Heathwood Drive Intersection Reconstruction Project

Beginning January 15, 2022, the intersection at San Marco Road and Heathwood Drive opened to traffic and will remain open throughout the remainder of the intersection reconstruction project. The next phase of the project will begin on January 19, 2022, and will include underground piping on the northeast side of San Marco Road and along Heathwood Drive. One lane on Heathwood Drive heading north will be closed. There will be no detours and the lanes will be outlined with cones and arrows. This lane closure is expected to last ten days. Drivers can expect temporary delays due to lane closures and lane shifts along Heathwood Drive. Please drive with caution and be aware of workers along Heathwood Drive and San Marco Road near City Hall and the Racquet Center.

Two crosswalks are closed and will continue to be closed throughout the project. Crosswalks across Heathwood on the south side of San Marco Road and crosswalks on San Marco on the east side of San Marco Road are not open. The sidewalk around the City Park lot on the corner of San Marco and Heathwood is also closed. Pedestrians and bicyclists should avoid this area as much as possible.

This project consists of a total reconstruction of the intersection to include storm water improvements, roadway elevation, asphalt milling and new asphalt surfaces, new curb and gutters, new sidewalks, and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) handicap ramps. The project is expected to take a total of 270 days and the City will provide updates as the project proceeds.

This Intersection Reconstruction Project is primarily funded through a Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) grant as well as a Florida Emergency Management Hazard Mitigation Grant. This reconstruction is part of a Citywide Master Drainage Project to improve drainage in areas that are prone to flooding.
